MACS

Overview

Dr. Supriya Puranik is a renowned IVF specialist and gynaecologist in Pune, with over 30 years of experience in the field. She offers cutting-edge treatments to infertility patients, such as Magnetically Activated Sperm Sorting (MACS).

What is MACS?

MACS is a technique that is used to select the best quality sperm for use in in vitro fertilization (IVF). The process uses magnetic beads coated with antibodies that bind to specific proteins found on the surface of the sperm. This enables scientists to select the healthiest sperm for use in the IVF procedure.

Process of MACS:

Step 1: Sample Collection

The first step in the process is the collection of semen from the male partner. The collected semen is then liquefied, and a sample is taken for analysis.

Step 2: Sperm Preparation

The sample is then prepared for MACS by washing and processing it. This process involves the removal of dead and abnormal sperm, leaving only the healthy sperm for selection.

Step 3: Magnetic Bead Binding

The magnetic beads coated with antibodies are then added to the sperm sample.

These antibodies bind to specific proteins found on the surface of the sperm, and a magnetic field is used to separate the healthy sperm from the unhealthy ones.

Step 4: Selection

The healthy sperm separated by the magnetic field are then collected for use in the IVF procedure.

Benefits of MACS:

  • Increased Pregnancy Success Rates:

The selection of healthy sperm through MACS can increase the chances of successful fertilization and ultimately lead to higher pregnancy success rates.

  • Reduced Risk of Genetic Abnormalities:

MACS can eliminate a significant percentage of abnormal sperm that could lead to genetic abnormalities in the offspring.

  • Improved IVF Results:

By using high-quality sperm, IVF results can be dramatically improved, leading to higher pregnancy success rates and a lower risk of miscarriage.
